A purchasing system ranks forty-one bids in seconds. The buyer spends two days on the first ten. All forty-one are approved, and the file records a human decision. What a system produces has become almost free; what it takes to check that output, and to answer for it, costs what it always did. The difference lands somewhere — and in most organizations, nobody decided where. What is worth asking about
- The number nobody has. How many items per week arrive at a checkpoint, and how many minutes a serious check takes. Almost no organization can state both.
- The seam. Where the order of ownership meets the order of capacity. Both can be right on their own and wrong together.
- The second seat of power. Whoever configures the system decides more than whoever approves its output — and leaves no trace doing it.
- How the book was written. The English edition was written by an AI system from the author's German manuscript. The book says so on its copyright page. That is a fair question to put to the author.
